It's most definitely his least focused or coherent album, but at the same time when one is releasing their debut, it normally seems like their sending their feelies in all these different directions to see what works for them, and what doesn't. So very obviously he had a shit ton to prove with College Dropout, and as far he couldn't really be particularly cocky with his lyrical content, and with the style of music I wouldn't say that it's at all maximalist or anything like that, but highly R&B influenced and sample-based hip hop.

I've over-thought his entire musical trajectory, and although this is stepping ahead a little of the question, I'll give y'all a run-down. Now, I think Yeezus is the start of a new era that still has remnants of the last one, just like Graduation.

I want to experiment with a few new styles and when I'm confident, I'll make an album like College Dropout but with the new styles.' I think that's what he was doing when he made MBDTF - he was making a College Dropout in his new style. I don't remember the exact quote, but he basically said something like, 'Everyone wants a new album like College Dropout but I don't. I remember an interview from when Graduation was still new and he was talking about how he didn't see the point in trying to make something complex like College Dropout in a style he was unfamiliar with (in context, I think he was talking about electronic music). My theory is that he simply didn't try as hard as he did with MBDTF. I agree that it's his best, but that doesn't mean he suddenly deciding that he would never be able to make anything as good as it again. I disagree with a lot of the other comments saying that Kanye knew that he couldn't top MBDTF.
